During his service to the church and the greater community, Pastor Edward grew increasingly aware of the responsibility of Virginia Baptists to care for their aging parishioners.
His dream was to offer a faith-based community that provided comprehensive care, while cultivating each individual’s spiritual and creative aspirations. Above all, he wanted to create a place that fostered dignity, faith and hope for seniors and their families.
Pastor Edward’s dream was realized in 1945 when the Baptist General Association of Virginia voted to create a new ministry and open a home for seniors. Three years later, thanks to the generosity of Virginia Baptists and a gift of a brick home (the Millman House), the first retirement home was opened in Culpeper in 1948. This home, albeit a temporary location, represented the keystone for Virginia Baptist Homes’ benevolent ministry. In 1951, the permanent Culpeper retirement community was opened under Pastor Edward’s tutelage.
